Dr. Welton Taylor Phd, Tuskegee Airman (Part 1)

Dr. Welton Taylor PhD, a Tuskegee Airman. This veteran Liaison Pilot served in the Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII. He flew L-4 and L-5 aircraft with the 93rd Infantry Division seeing combat in the Solomons Islands, New Guinea and the Philippines. Surviving a crash landing behind Japanese lines, he led his observer to safety despite suffering serious injuries to both knees.

Corporal Mattingly was part of the 816th Aviation Battalion and helped construct airstrips in England and with the advancing US Army as they worked their way from the coast of France into the heart of Germany.

Richard served aboard the U.S.S. Conklin DE 439. His job was as sonar man which involved searching for submarines and directing fire with depth charges on enemy submarines.

C. Burton Nelson, Army Airborne

Sgt. Nelson served with the 17th and 82nd Airborne Divisions in Europe during WWII. Burton also recounts training he received in gliders and an encounter with a group of German paratroopers.

PFC. US Army, 1st infantry division 9th Armor. He crossed the Rhine River at Remagen bridge and and served as a guard during the Nuremburg Trial.

Staff Sergeant, Elmer Johnson served with the AAF base unit in England. He helped load and arm B-17 and B-25 Bombers as they headed toward Germany. Listen to his account of life in war-time England, and see his personal scrap book.


Wally DePorter
Wally DePorter, US Navy

Machinist's mate 2nd Class Wallace DePorter served during WWII on the USS Lea and the USS Stribling Destroyers. Wallace shares his experiences and one particular event in which the Destroyer Lea got rammed and nearly sinks. His primary duties were escorting various ships including troop transport in the atlantic while dodging submarines.
